A Summer to Remember
기억나는 여름
My name is Jiwoo, and I’m a first grader at Hankook High School.
제 이름은 지우이고, 한국고등학교 1학년입니다.
Two things I truly love are animals and travel.
제가 진정으로 사랑하는 두 가지는 동물과 여행입니다.
I used to watch nature documentaries as a child and have always been fascinated by different animals around the world.
저는 어렸을 때 자연 다큐멘터리를 보곤 했고, 항상 전 세계의 다양한 동물들에게 매료되어 왔습니다.
So, when I saw a poster about a volunteer camp in Kenya, I knew this was what I wanted to do during my summer break.
그래서 케냐의 자원봉사 캠프에 관한 포스터를 봤을 때, 이것이 제가 여름 방학 동안 하고 싶은 일이라는 것을 깨달았습니다.
Day 1
When I arrived at the airport in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, I got my first taste of Kenya—busy, exciting, and warm.
케냐의 수도 나이로비 공항에 도착했을 때, 바쁘고 신나고 따뜻한 케냐를 처음 맛보았습니다.
When I went outside, I was greeted by the camp supervisor, Henry.
밖에 나갔을 때 캠프 감독관 헨리의 환영을 받았습니다.
Other volunteers from different countries also arrived at similar times, and we started making new friends right away.
다른 나라의 자원봉사자들도 비슷한 시기에 도착했고, 우리는 곧바로 새로운 친구를 사귀기 시작했습니다.
We got into a large van and drove around the crowded city.
우리는 큰 밴에 올라타서 혼잡한 도시를 돌아다녔습니다.
Although English is widely spoken in Kenya, the people here also use Swahili.
케냐에서는 영어가 널리 사용되지만, 이곳 사람들도 스와힐리어를 사용합니다.
The first Swahili word we learned was jambo, which means “hello.”
우리가 처음 배운 스와힐리어 단어는 “안녕하세요”라는 뜻의 잠보였습니다
Henry took all of us to the Nairobi National Museum, where I became fascinated by the diverse cultural and natural heritage of Kenya.
헨리는 우리 모두를 나이로비 국립 박물관으로 데려갔습니다. 그곳에서 저는 케냐의 다양한 문화와 자연 유산에 매료되었습니다.
Going from hall to hall, I learned about Kenya’s many natural resources and animals, different communities and languages, and even important artists.
복도를 돌아다니며 케냐의 많은 천연 자원과 동물, 다양한 커뮤니티와 언어, 심지어 중요한 예술가들에 대해 배웠습니다.
One of the most impressive displays was the statue of Ahmed, an elephant with massive tusks.
가장 인상적인 전시 중 하나는 거대한 엄니를 가진 코끼리 아흐메드의 동상이었습니다.
It symbolizes the movement against illegal hunting in Kenya.
그것은 케냐에서 불법 사냥에 반대하는 운동을 상징합니다.
Then we headed to the Kigio Wildlife Conservancy where we would begin our volunteer work.
그런 다음 우리는 키지오 야생동물 보호소로 가서 자원봉사 활동을 시작했습니다.
There, several impalas were waiting to welcome us.

The camp house was made from stone and olive wood.

After an amazing day, I fell asleep the minute my head hit the pillow.

Day 2
In the morning, volunteers were told what they were going to do.
아침에 자원봉사자들에게 무엇을 할 것인지 알려주었습니다.
I was assigned to “the giraffe survey” group.
저는 “기린 조사” 그룹에 배정되었습니다.
At the conservancy, there were 26 giraffes.
보호구역에는 26마리의 기린이 있었습니다.
All of them had names and could be identified by the spots on their bodies.
그들 모두는 이름이 있었고 몸의 반점으로 식별할 수 있었습니다.
Like the human fingerprint, the pattern of spots on a giraffe is unique.
인간의 지문처럼 기린의 반점 패턴도 독특합니다.
Our group’s job was to find the giraffes and identify them using cameras and binoculars.
우리 그룹의 임무는 카메라와 쌍안경을 사용하여 기린을 찾아 식별하는 것이었습니다.
Then we had to record their locations and activities.
그런 다음 그들의 위치와 활동을 기록해야 했습니다.
We often needed to take pictures of both sides of the animal for identification. It wasn’t easy.
식별을 위해 동물의 양쪽 사진을 찍어야 하는 경우가 많았습니다. 쉽지 않았습니다.
This required us to go around the giraffe to the other side before it ran away.
이로 인해 기린이 도망치기 전에 반대편으로 이동해야 했습니다.
Later, back at the camp, we had to compare our photos of the giraffes with the ones in the identification book.
나중에 캠프에 돌아와서 기린 사진을 신분증에 있는 기린 사진과 비교해야 했습니다.
We not only successfully identified most of the giraffes but also discovered new baby giraffes that were not in the book yet!
우리는 대부분의 기린을 성공적으로 식별했을 뿐만 아니라 아직 책에 나오지 않은 새로운 아기 기린도 발견했습니다!
Day 3
My assignment for today was to search for illegal animal traps on the conservancy.
오늘 제 임무는 보호구역에서 불법 동물 덫을 찾는 것이었습니다.
Hunters illegally set up wire traps and wait for animals to get caught.
사냥꾼들은 불법적으로 철조망을 설치하고 동물들이 잡히기를 기다립니다.
To stop this from happening, my group drove out to the field with some experienced trap spotters.
이런 일이 발생하지 않도록 제 그룹은 숙련된 덫 탐지기 몇 명과 함께 현장으로 차를 몰고 나갔습니다.
There, we spread out and looked for traps.
거기서 우리는 흩어져 덫을 찾았습니다.
We found a lot of wire traps on the ground.
우리는 땅에서 많은 와이어 트랩을 발견했습니다.
Some traps were hidden in the bushes and others were attached to fences.
일부 함정은 덤불에 숨겨져 있었고 다른 함정은 울타리에 부착되어 있었습니다.
Every time we found a trap, we were saving the life of an animal.
덫을 발견할 때마다 우리는 동물의 생명을 구하고 있었습니다.
It was one of the most rewarding moments during my time in Kenya.
케냐에 머무는 동안 가장 보람찬 순간 중 하나였습니다.
Day 4
Today’s camp dinner was chapati, which is one of the most popular Kenyan dishes.
오늘의 캠프 디너는 케냐에서 가장 인기 있는 요리 중 하나인 차파티였습니다.
It’s made with flour dough and fried in oil, so it’s crispy on the outside but moist inside.
밀가루 반죽으로 만들어 기름에 튀겨서 겉은 바삭하지만 속은 촉촉합니다.
It was served with fried vegetables and beans, and everything was so delicious!
튀긴 야채와 콩과 함께 제공되었는데, 모든 것이 정말 맛있었어요!
All the volunteers loved it, regardless of where they were from.
모든 자원봉사자들은 어디에서 왔는지 상관없이 그것을 매우 좋아했습니다.
After eating more than enough, we went outside and looked at the brilliant stars.
충분히 먹은 후, 우리는 밖으로 나가서 빛나는 별들을 보았습니다.
Because Kenya is located on the equator, the stars in the night sky were foreign and new to me.
케냐는 적도에 위치해 있기 때문에 밤하늘의 별들은 저에게 낯설고 새로웠습니다.
Watching the stars while listening to the sounds of wild animals in the distance was such an unreal experience.
멀리서 야생 동물의 소리를 들으며 별을 보는 것은 정말 비현실적인 경험이었습니다.
Tomorrow, some of us are planning to visit baby elephants in the elephant orphanage in Nairobi.
내일 우리 중 일부는 나이로비의 코끼리 고아원에 있는 아기 코끼리를 방문할 계획입니다.
These baby elephants have lost their mothers to hunters looking for ivory.
이 아기 코끼리들은 상아를 찾는 사냥꾼들에게 어미를 잃었습니다.
So far, I have learned so much through this volunteer work.
지금까지 이 자원봉사를 통해 많은 것을 배웠습니다.
I have traveled to a new part of the world and made a small but positive impact on the lives of the animals here.
저는 새로운 지역을 여행하며 이곳 동물들의 삶에 작지만 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤습니다.
My stay here has been filled with unique experiences and surprises.
제가 이곳에 머무는 동안 독특한 경험과 놀라움으로 가득했습니다.
I wonder what other wonderful things are waiting for me in my remaining days in Kenya!
