Most people agree with the idea that recycling is an easy way to make a positive impact on the planet.
대부분의 사람들은 재활용이 지구에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 쉬운 방법이라는 생각에 동의한다.
It makes you feel good about yourself, too.

But your efforts may sometimes be harming the environment instead.
하지만 여러분의 노력은 도리어 때때로 환경에 해가 될 수 있다.
How can this be? Well, it is because you might be a wishcycler.

What Is Wishcycling?
위시사이클링이란 무엇인가?
Imagine the following situation.
다음과 같은 상황을 상상해 보자.
On your way home from school, someone hands you a piece of paper.
방과 후 집에 가는 길에 누군가가 당신에게 종이 한 장을 건넨다.
You glance at the shiny flyer advertising a new study café.
당신은 새로운 스터디 카페를 홍보하는 반짝이는 전단지를 힐끗 본다.
As you are about to throw it into the garbage, you decide to put it into the recycling bin instead.
그것을 쓰레기통에 던져 넣으려고 하다가 그러는 대신 재활용품 수거함에 넣기로 한다.
You think flyers can be recycled because they’re made of paper.
전단지는 종이로 만들어졌기 때문에 당신은 그것이 재활용될 수 있다고 생각한다.
What just happened is a case of wishcycling.

It is the act of trying to recycle something that should not be recycled.

Wishcycling is usually done with good intentions, but it often causes more harm than good.

Why Is It a Problem?

For example, if you wishcycle a greasy pizza box, it can soak clean paper products with oil.

Wishcycled items can also damage the sorting machines, causing them to be temporarily shut down for repairs.

How Can We Stop Wishcycling?

With a little effort, we can put an end to wishcycling.

First, make sure your recyclables are empty, clean, and dry.
첫째, 재활용하려는 물건이 비어 있고, 깨끗하며, 건조한 상태인지 확인해라.
Shake out any remaining liquid from bottles and jars.
병이나 용기에서 남아 있는 액체를 털어 내라.
After that, wash them out and wait for them to dry.

You also need to remove the labels.

Now they are ready to be tossed in the recycling bin.

Have you ever seen a recycling symbol with the number “7” and the word “other” under it?

This symbol means the product is made of two different materials and will be difficult to recycle.

Checking the recycling symbols like this will help you stop wishcycling.

Third, check the recycling guidelines for your local area.
셋째, 지역의 재활용 지침을 확인해라.
Different areas have different rules on what can be recycled.
지역마다 재활용할 수 있는 것에 대한 다른 규정을 가지고 있다.
You can easily learn about the guidelines for your area by visiting your local government website.
지역 정부 홈페이지를 방문하면 해당 지역의 지침을 쉽게 알 수 있다.
You can also look for recycling posters near recycling bins.
재활용품 수거함 근처에서 재활용 (규정에 대한) 포스터를 찾아볼 수도 있다.
Lastly, don’t recycle an item when in doubt.
마지막으로, 의심스러울 때는 재활용하지 마라.
Even after you check the symbols and guidelines, you might still be unsure whether it is recyclable.
기호와 지침을 확인하고서도 여전히 재활용할 수 있는지 확신하지 못할 수 있다.
In that case, you should put it in the trash.

You might feel bad that you may be throwing away a recyclable item.

However, doing so may actually be better for the environment.

We all know that living without producing trash is impossible.
