A Trip to the Netherlands

Before my trip to the Netherlands, all I knew of the country was that it is famous for windmills and tulips.
네덜란드로 여행을 떠나기 전에 제가 이 나라에 대해 아는 것이라고는 이곳이 풍차와 튤립으로 유명하다는 것뿐이었습니다.
But as I cycled from place to place, I experienced many things that I hadn’t expected, and I wanted to share some of them with you.
하지만 저는 자전거를 타고 여기저기 다니면서 제가 예상하지 못한 많은 것들을 경험했고, 그 일부를 여러분과 공유하고 싶었습니다.
The Anne Frank House and the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam

My first stop was the Anne Frank House, one of the old buildings lined up along the Prinsengracht, a canal in Amsterdam.

Since it was close to the hotel I was staying at, I decided to rent a bike to go there.
그곳은 제가 머문 호텔에서 가까워서 저는 자전거를 빌려 타고 그곳에 가기로 했습니다.
I enjoyed riding along the canal.
운하를 따라서 자전거를 타고 가는 것은 즐거웠습니다.
The Anne Frank House is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands.
안네 프랑크 하우스는 네덜란드에서 사람들이 가장 많이 찾는 박물관 중 하나입니다.
It housed the secret hiding place of Anne Frank.
그곳에는 안네 프랑크의 비밀 은신처가 있었습니다.
There was an old bookcase on the second floor.
2층에 오래된 책장이 있었습니다.
It looked ordinary, but behind it was a secret space where Anne and her family hid for over two years during World War II.
그것은 평범해 보였지만, 그 뒤에는 안네와 가족들이 제2차 세계 대전 중 2년이 넘게 숨어 지낸 비밀 공간이 있었습니다.
The steep stairs and narrow passages gave me a better understanding of what life must have been like for them back then.

After visiting the Anne Frank House, I took a canal cruise on the Prinsengracht.
안네 프랑크 하우스를 방문하고 나서 저는 프린센흐라흐트에서 유람선을 탔습니다.
The canal houses I saw along the way had mostly been built during the Dutch Golden Age, which gives them great historical value.
가는 길에 제가 본 운하의 집들은 대부분 네덜란드의 황금시대에 지어진 것들이어서 상당한 역사적 가치가 있습니다.
Taking the cruise was a great way to see the city from different angles.
유람선을 타는 것은 이 도시를 다른 시각으로 보는 좋은 방법입니다.
The gentle touch of the wind made the experience even more pleasant.
살며시 불어오는 바람이 그 경험을 더 기분 좋게 만들었습니다.
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam
암스테르담의 반 고흐 미술관
Amsterdam is home to a lot of museums, but the Van Gogh Museum was the one I was really excited to visit.
암스테르담은 수많은 박물관의 본고장이지만, 반 고흐 미술관은 제가 방문하게 되어 정말 마음이 들뜬 곳이었습니다.
The most interesting part of the museum was the way the exhibits were arranged to show how the artist’s style had changed over time.
그 미술관의 가장 특이한 점은 예술가의 양식이 시간이 가면서 어떻게 달라졌는지를 볼 수 있도록 전시물들이 배치된 방식입니다.
The museum showed many of Vincent van Gogh’s most well-known works, including my personal favorites: The Bedroom, Sunflowers, and Wheatfield with Crows.
미술관에서는 빈센트 반 고흐의 가장 잘 알려진 작품들을 보여 주었는데, 그중에는 제가 가장 좋아하는 ‘침실’, ‘해바라기’, ‘까마귀가 나는 밀밭’도 있었습니다.
The bright colors in The Bedroom seemed to convey a sense of relaxation.
‘침실’의 밝은 색상들은 휴식의 느낌을 전해 주는 것 같았습니다.
The different shades of yellow in Sunflowers were just amazing.
‘해바라기’의 다채로운 노란 색조는 놀라울 따름이었습니다.
In Wheatfield with Crows, the contrast between the bright yellow wheat field and the cool blue sky was striking.
‘까마귀가 나는 밀밭’에서는 밝은 노란 밀밭과 차가운 푸른 하늘의 대조가 인상적이었습니다.
Overall, seeing the artworks in person was a very powerful experience.
종합하자면, 반 고흐의 작품들을 직접 보는 것은 무척 강렬한 경험이었습니다.
The museum also displayed the letters that Van Gogh wrote to his younger brother, Theo.
미술관에서는 반 고흐가 그의 동생 테오에게 쓴 편지들도 전시했습니다.
Reading those letters, I found out how much the artist loved his brother.
그 편지들을 읽으면서 저는 이 예술가가 그의 동생을 얼마나 사랑했는지 알게 되었습니다.
After I bought a few postcards with Van Gogh’s art on them, I slowly cycled back to the hotel.
저는 반 고흐의 작품이 그려진 엽서를 몇 장 산 뒤에 자전거를 타고 천천히 호텔로 돌아갔습니다.
On my way back, I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful, calm, and scenic views of the city, especially people relaxing on the grass and enjoying the sun.
돌아가는 길에 저는 아름답고 차분하면서도 멋진 도시 풍경, 특히 풀밭에서 쉬면서 햇볕을 즐기는 사람들의 모습에 감탄하지 않을 수 없었습니다.
Windmills in the Zaanse Schans and Seafood in Volendam

I highly recommend visiting the Zaanse Schans and Volendam if you want to get out of the busy city to experience traditional Dutch culture.
분주한 도시를 벗어나 네덜란드의 전통문화를 경험하고 싶다면 잔서스한스와 폴렌담에 가 볼 것을 강력히 추천합니다.
A trip to the Netherlands wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the windmills.
풍차 탐방이 빠지면 네덜란드 여행은 완벽할 수 없을 것입니다.
Fortunately, you can get to the Zaanse Schans, which is famous for its windmills, in just 17 minutes by train from Amsterdam.
다행히, 풍차로 유명한, 잔서스한스는 암스테르담에서 기차로 17분이면 갈 수 있습니다.
The moment I saw the village, its beauty took my breath away.
저는 이 마을을 본 순간 그 아름다움에 숨이 멎을 것 같았습니다.
Several windmills were spinning by the river in the distance.
멀리서 강가에 몇 대의 풍차가 돌고 있었습니다.
Soon I felt like I was taken to a point in the past.
곧 저는 과거의 한 시점으로 옮겨진 것같이 느꼈습니다.
I looked into one of the working windmills, and it was grinding nuts into oil with its large stone wheels.
작동하는 풍차 하나를 들여다보았는데 그것은 커다란 돌로 된 바퀴로 견과를 갈아서 기름을 만들고 있었습니다.
Near the windmills, I found a cheese farm and a clog factory.
풍차 근처에서 저는 치즈 농가와 나막신 공장을 발견했습니다.
I was surprised by the variety of Dutch cheeses and actually a little unsure about tasting them at first because they were mostly new to me.
저는 네덜란드 치즈의 다양함에 놀랐고, 대부분 저에게는 낯선 것들이어서 처음에는 맛을 봐야 할지 확신이 별로 없었습니다.
However, when I tried some of them, they turned out to be incredibly satisfying.
하지만 몇 개 먹어 보니, 믿을 수 없을 정도로 만족스러웠습니다.
I also tried on a few pairs of clogs and found them quite comfortable, which I hadn’t expected.
나막신도 몇 켤레 신어 봤는데, 예상과는 달리 꽤 편안했습니다.
Volendam was a pretty fishing village with neat rows of brick houses with orange roofs.
폴렌담은 지붕이 오렌지색인 벽돌집들이 반듯이 줄지어 있는 예쁜 어촌 마을이었습니다.
The harbor was dotted with boats.
항구에는 배들이 여기저기 흩어져 있었습니다.
I rented a bike to explore Volendam, and the shop owner said,
폴렌담을 둘러보려고 자전거를 빌렸는데, 가게 주인이 이렇게 말했습니다.
“In Volendam, do as the locals do and eat seafood.”
“폴렌담에서는 주민들이 하는 대로 하고 해산물을 드세요.”
At a restaurant, I ordered one of the Netherlands’ most popular dishes, kibbeling.
식당에서 저는 네덜란드에서 가장 인기 있는 음식 중 하나인 키벨링을 주문했습니다.
The fried fish snack was hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious!
이 생선튀김은 뜨겁고, 신선하고, 굉장히 맛있었습니다!
The Cube Houses in Rotterdam
로테르담의 큐브 하우스
After being completely destroyed during World War II, Rotterdam was restored into a beautiful port city.
로테르담은 제2차 세계 대전 중에 완전히 파괴되고 나서 아름다운 항구 도시로 복원되었습니다.
Experimental and artistic constructions were used to improve the appearance of the city.
도시 외관을 개선하기 위해 실험적이고 예술적인 건축물들이 사용되었습니다.
The Cube Houses in Rotterdam are among the most innovative buildings in the country.
로테르담에 있는 큐브 하우스는 그 나라(네덜란드)에서 가장 혁신적인 건물에 속합니다.
The bright yellow houses were something I had been looking forward to seeing, and they were as fantastic as I had expected.
밝은 노란색 집들은 제가 고대했던 것이었는데 기대만큼이나 환상적이었습니다.
One of the key features of the Cube Houses is that the cubes are tilted by 45 degrees.
큐브 하우스의 주요 특징 중 하나는 큐브가 45도로 기울어져 있다는 것입니다.
I visited the Show Cube Museum to get a feel of what life in such a house was like.
저는 이런 집에서 산다는 게 어떤 기분일지 느껴 보려고 전시관에 갔습니다.
From the outside, it looked entirely twisted, but once I went inside, it was surprisingly quite comfortable.
그것은 밖에서 볼 때 완전히 뒤틀린 것처럼 보였지만, 일단 안으로 들어가니 놀랍게도 상당히 아늑했습니다.
For the last few days after the trip, I haven’t been able to get the charming sights of the Netherlands out of my mind.
여행을 마친 후 지난 며칠 동안 저는 네덜란드의 매력적인 광경들을 마음 속에서 지우지 못했습니다.
