Volunteering at an Animal Sanctuary
동물 생크추어리에서의 봉사 활동

As the leader of our school club Care for Animals, I organized a volunteer trip to an animal sanctuary for my club members.
우리 학교 동아리 Care for Animals의 회장으로서, 나는 우리 동아리 회원들을 위해 동물 생크추어리로 떠나는 자원봉사 여행을 준비했다.
An animal sanctuary is a special place where rescued, injured, or abused animals can live in a safe and caring environment.
동물 생크추어리는 구조되거나 부상을 입었거나 학대를 당한 동물들이 안전하고 보살핌을 받을 수 있는 환경에서 살 수 있는 특별한 장소이다.
All the club members and I agreed that the sanctuary would be the perfect place to learn about animal care.
동아리 회원 모두와 나는 생크추어리가 동물 보호에 대해 배울 수 있는 완벽한 장소가 될 것이라는 데 동의했다.
Excited for a new experience, we set out to volunteer.
새로운 경험에 들떠서 우리는 봉사 활동을 떠났다.

Our club arrived at the Free Animals sanctuary.
우리 동아리는 Free Animals 생크추어리에 도착했다.
Jane, the staff member in charge of animal care, welcomed us with a big smile and gave us a tour of the facility.
동물들을 보살피는 일을 담당하는 직원인 Jane은 우리를 환한 웃음으로 맞아 주었고 우리에게 시설을 안내해 주었다.
It was amazing to see bears and elephants moving freely in a large field.
넓은 벌판을 자유롭게 돌아다니는 곰과 코끼리를 보는 것은 정말 멋진 일이었다.
Our tasks for the day included cleaning the shelter and preparing food for the animals.
오늘 우리의 임무에는 보호소를 청소하는 것과 동물들의 먹이를 준비하는 것이 포함되어 있었다.
While cleaning the habitats, we checked if there were any hazards that could harm the animals.
동물들의 서식지를 청소하는 동안 우리는 동물들에게 해를 입힐 만한 위험 요소가 있는지 확인했다.
Then, we helped prepare the food by cutting up fruits and vegetables and dividing them into several large baskets.
그러고 나서 과일과 채소를 자르고 그것들을 몇 개의 큰 바구니에 나눠 담으면서 먹이 준비하는 것을 도왔다.
For old elephants with weak teeth, we chopped bananas instead of the sugarcane that they usually eat.
이가 약한 나이 든 코끼리를 위해서는 코끼리가 보통 먹는 사탕수수 대신에 바나나를 잘라두었다.
Spending the whole day helping out with the animals was an incredible experience for me.
동물들을 도우면서 하루를 보낸 것은 내게 멋진 경험이었다.
It was a rewarding experience, and I was impressed with the attention the staff members gave to all the animals.
그것은 보람 있는 경험이었고, 나는 직원들이 모든 동물에게 쏟는 애정에 감명받았다.

Today, we did something special for Ben and Lily.
오늘 우리는 Ben과 Lily를 위해 특별한 일을 했다.
These two baby bears were rescued after they had been raised illegally in a tiny cage on a farm for many years.
이 두 마리 아기곰은 수년간 농장의 작은 우리 안에서 불법으로 사육된 후에 구조되었다.
To help the bears restore their natural instincts, we carried out some special activities known as “behavioral enrichment.”
곰들이 타고난 본능을 회복하는 것을 도와주기 위해, 우리는 ‘행동 풍부화’로 알려진 특별한 활동들을 시행했다.
For example, we made honey-log feeders for the bears.
예를 들어, 우리는 곰을 위해 꿀이 든 통나무 먹이통을 만들었다.
First, we made several holes in a log and filled them with honey.
먼저, 통나무에 구멍을 몇 개 내고 그 안에 꿀을 채워 넣었다.
Then, we hung the honey-log feeders on trees near the bears’ habitat.
그러고 나서 꿀이 든 통나무 먹이통을 곰들의 서식지 가까이 있는 나무에 걸어 두었다.
As bears are intelligent and curious creatures, they can become bored and stressed when lacking mental and physical stimulation.
곰은 똑똑하고 호기심 많은 동물이라서 정신적 자극과 신체적 자극이 없으면 지루해하고 스트레스를 받을 수 있다.
The honey-log feeders stimulate their natural curiosity and keep them as active as they would be in the wild.
꿀이 든 통나무 먹이통은 그들의 본능적인 호기심을 자극하고 그들을 야생에 있을 때만큼 활발함을 유지하도록 해 준다.
After a while, Ben and Lily approached the feeders and started eating the honey inside. They are so cute!
잠시 후 Ben과 Lily는 먹이통으로 다가가서 그 안에 있는 꿀을 먹기 시작했다. 정말 귀여웠다!

This morning, we had the opportunity to learn about animal treatment thanks to Molly, an elderly elephant.
오늘 아침 우리는 나이 든 코끼리, Molly 덕분에 동물의 치료에 대해 배울 기회가 있었다.
After spending 25 years carrying tourists along rough roads, she developed a twisted spine and foot pain.
거친 길에서 25년간 관광객들을 실어 나른 후 Molly는 척추가 뒤틀리고 발에 통증이 생겼다.
In order to support Jane in taking care of Molly’s foot, we took part in positive reinforcement training, which involves using rewards to encourage desirable behaviors.
Molly의 발을 치료하는 Jane을 돕기 위해 우리는 긍정 행동 강화 훈련에 참여했는데, 그것은 바람직한 행동을 강화하는 데 보상을 이용하는 것을 포함한다.
When I gently touched her foot with a pole and called out, “foot,” she lifted it.
내가 막대기로 Molly의 발을 부드럽게 건드리면서 “발”이라고 말하면 Molly가 발을 들어 올렸다.
We then rewarded her with a sweet piece of watermelon, her favorite fruit.
그러면 우리는 Molly가 가장 좋아하는 과일인 달콤한 수박 한 조각을 보상으로 줬다.
This training helps reduce the stress that animals experience during controlled situations, such as treatment or a health examination.
이 훈련은 동물이 치료나 건강 검진과 같이 통제된 상황 속에서 겪는 스트레스를 줄이는 데 도움을 준다.
The good news is Molly seems to be adapting well, and I expect her to get better soon.
좋은 소식은 Molly가 잘 적응하고 있는 것처럼 보인다는 것이고 나는 Molly가 곧 나아질 것이라고 기대한다.

On the last day, we were called to the rescue center due to a sudden emergency.
마지막 날에 우리는 갑작스러운 응급 상황 때문에 구조 센터로 불려 가게 되었다.
Some dehydrated birds had fallen out of the sky in the city and were brought to the center.
탈수 상태의 몇몇 새들이 도시의 하늘에서 떨어져서 센터로 이송되었다.
Following the veterinarian’s guidance, we provided water to the birds while the vets treated their broken wings and legs and injected them with vitamins for a speedy recovery.
수의사가 새들의 부러진 날개와 다리를 치료하고 빠른 회복을 위해 그들에게 비타민을 주입하는 동안 우리는 수의사의 안내에 따르며 새들에게 물을 주었다.
It was shocking that this type of accident happens every year since the high temperatures dry up water sources in the city.
높은 기온이 도시의 수자원을 말려버리기 때문에 이런 종류의 사건이 매해 일어나고 있다는 것은 충격이었다.
Caring for the birds, I couldn’t help but reflect on the impact of human activities on climate change and how it harms animals.
새들을 돌보면서 나는 인간의 활동이 기후 변화에 미치는 영향과 그것이 동물들에게 어떤 해를 끼치는지에 대해 깊이 생각해 볼 수밖에 없었다.
Saying goodbye to the animals and staff, I felt grateful for the opportunity to volunteer.
동물들과 직원들에게 작별 인사를 하면서 나는 봉사 활동을 할 수 있었던 기회에 감사했다.
From this experience, I learned the importance of treating animals with respect and care.
이번 경험을 통해 나는 동물들을 존중하면서 조심히 대하는 것의 중요성을 알게 되었다.
I also came to realize that humans are just another kind of animal and share the Earth with all other living creatures.
또한 인간은 동물의 또 다른 종일 뿐이며 다른 모든 생명체와 지구를 공유하고 있다는 것을 깨달았다.
To improve animal welfare, I’ll work hard with Care for Animals members.
동물의 복지를 향상시키기 위해 나는 Care for Animals 회원들과 열심히 노력할 것이다.
Hopefully, I’ll have the chance to volunteer at another sanctuary next summer.
바라건대 내년 여름에 또 다른 생크추어리에서 봉사 활동을 할 기회가 있다면 좋겠다.
