A month ago, I flew to San Francisco, feeling excited and a little scared that I was traveling without my parents.
한 달 전, 나는 부모님 없이 여행한다는 사실에 설렘과 약간의 두려움을 느끼며 비행기를 타고 샌프란시스코로 갔다.
My only companions would be my best friend, Dan, and my wheelchair.

I wasn’t sure what kinds of challenges we would face, but Dan assured me that we would be the coolest travelers in Northern California.

When we finally landed in San Francisco, the Golden Gate City, Dan shouted, “Let’s get rolling!”

Known for its rolling hills, the city has an extensive public transportation system.

I was disappointed to find out that the historic cable cars, which I had been looking forward to riding, do not accommodate wheelchair users.

Therefore, we decided to take a city tour bus with wheelchair access.

When Dan and I got on the bus, the friendly driver welcomed us aboard, and we were off.
댄과 내가 버스에 탔을 때, 친절한 운전기사가 우리를 반갑게 맞이해 주었고, 우리는 떠났다.
Fisherman’s Wharf is popular for its pretty shops and seafood restaurants.

We were hungry, but it took almost an hour for us to look around and decide what to eat for lunch.
우리는 배가 고팠지만, 주변을 둘러보고 점심으로 무엇을 먹을지 결정하는 데 거의 한 시간이 걸렸다.
We chose to eat a roasted crab and clam chowder soup.

The sea lions peacefully lying on the floats near the pier looked like melting chocolate.
부두 근처의 부유물 위에 평화롭게 누워있는 바다사자들은 녹고 있는 초콜릿처럼 보였다.
They didn’t smell pleasant up close, yet their cuteness delayed our visit to the Golden Gate Bridge, the famous spot that appears in most movies and TV shows filmed in San Francisco.
바다사자들은 가까이에서는 기분 좋은 냄새가 나지 않았지만, 그들의 귀여움이 샌프란시스코에서 촬영된 대부분의 영화와 TV 프로그램에 등장하는 유명한 장소인 금문교로 향하는 우리의 방문을 늦췄다.
We took a cruise, enjoying the view of the city.
우리는 도시의 경치를 즐기며 유람선을 탔다.
As we passed the bridge, the summer breeze blew slowly, and we watched the beautiful sunset.
다리를 지나면서 여름 산들바람이 서서히 불었고, 우리는 아름다운 석양을 감상했다.
The next day,
we traveled to Yosemite National Park, a place four hours away from San Francisco and about five times bigger than Seoul.
다음날, 우리는 샌프란시스코에서 4시간 거리에 있으며 서울보다 5배 정도 큰 요세미티 국립 공원으로 여행을 떠났다.
The park is famous for Northern California’s natural scenery of grand waterfalls, valleys, and countless forests.
그 공원은 웅장한 폭포, 계곡, 그리고 셀 수 없이 많은 숲으로 이루어진 북부 캘리포니아의 자연 경관으로 유명하다.
Dan’s uncle Roy, who lives in San Francisco, kindly gave us a ride to the park.
샌프란시스코에 사는 댄의 삼촌 로이(Roy)는 친절하게도 우리를 공원까지 태워다 주셨다.
While heading east in his car, we saw the scenery gradually changing from city to suburb, to forest, and finally, to mountain.
그의 차를 타고 동쪽으로 향하던 중, 우리는 도시에서 교외로, 숲으로, 그리고 마침내 산으로 풍경이 점차 변하는 것을 보았다.
By lunchtime, we arrived at the park, and each of us had a giant hamburger to fuel up for a hike.
점심시간 무렵에 우리는 공원에 도착했고, 각자 하이킹을 위한 힘을 내기 위해 거대한 햄버거를 먹었다.
While exploring a trail in Yosemite, we stopped frequently to appreciate the fresh air blowing through the giant sequoias.
요세미티의 등산로를 탐험하던 중, 우리는 거대한 세쿼이아 나무 사이로 불어오는 신선한 공기를 즐기기 위해 자주 멈춰 섰다.
We passed some famous trees like the Grizzly Giant, which is about 63.7 meters tall and is almost 3,000 years old.
우리는 높이가 약 63.7m이고 거의 3,000년이나 된 그리즐리 자이언트와 같은 유명한 나무들을 지나쳤다.
It was massive, and I felt quite small in comparison.
그것은 거대했고, 나는 그에 비해 꽤 작게 느껴졌다.
Our hike took a dangerous turn at one point.
우리의 등산은 어느 지점에서 위험한 국면을 맞이했다.
As we made our way down a trail, we encountered a black bear.
우리는 등산로를 따라 가던 중, 흑곰 한 마리와 마주쳤다.
I was so excited that I took out my camera to take a picture.
나는 너무 신나서 사진을 찍기 위해 카메라를 꺼냈다.
It must have smelled the cold cuts and chips we had packed because it began to approach us.
흑곰이 우리에게 다가오기 시작한 것으로 보아, 그것이 우리가 싸 온 햄과 튀김과자 냄새를 맡은 게 틀림없었다.
Thinking quickly, Uncle Roy grabbed a stone and threw it, yelling and waving.
로이 삼촌은 재빨리 생각한 뒤, 돌멩이를 집어 던지며 소리를 지르고 손을 내저었다.
After turning me around, Dan helped Uncle Roy push me back the way we came.
댄은 나를 돌려세운 후, 로이 삼촌을 도와 우리가 왔던 길로 나를 밀었다.
Dan said, “I guess it’s time to leave now.”
댄은 “이제 떠나야 할 때인 것 같네요.”라고 말했다.
That wasn’t a problem because I had gotten my picture!
그것은 문제가 되지 않았는데, 왜냐하면 나는 사진을 찍어 두었기 때문이었다!
Another memorable part of the trip was the bike ride.
여행에서 기억에 남는 또 다른 부분은 자전거 타기였다.
Dan found out that the National Park has a bike rental service and offers hand-crank bikes.
댄은 국립공원에 자전거 대여 서비스가 있고 수동으로 크랭크를 돌릴 수 있는 자전거를 제공한다는 사실을 알게 되었다.
Dan persuaded me to try one, and soon I was able to use the hand crank pretty well.
댄은 나에게 이 자전거를 타 보라고 설득했고, 곧 나는 수동 크랭크를 꽤 잘 사용할 수 있게 되었다.
We had a fun day riding along the trails in the park.
우리는 공원의 등산로를 따라 달리며 즐거운 하루를 보냈다.
The Tunnel View in Yosemite Valley was like a masterpiece painted by Mother Nature.
요세미티 계곡의 터널 뷰는 마치 대자연이 그린 걸작 같았다.
The trail also led us to green fields and streams where we saw some wildlife.
등산로는 또한 우리가 야생 동물을 본 초록 들판과 개울로 우리를 이끌었다.
Watching people floating down the Merced River and hiking the Half Dome was cool.
머세드강을 따라 떠내려가고 하프 돔을 하이킹하는 사람들을 구경하는 것은 멋졌다.
It was indeed a wonderful trip, with lots of laughter, joy, and sweat.
많은 웃음, 기쁨, 땀이 함께한 멋진 여행이었다.
I am now in my room where I am organizing hundreds of photos, including one of the bottom half of a black bear to post on social media.
나는 지금 내 방에서 소셜 미디어에 게시할 흑곰의 하반신 사진을 포함한 수백 장의 사진을 정리하고 있다.
Of course, I have valuable memories too.
물론 나에게는 소중한 추억도 있다.
I was fortunate to have companions like Dan and Uncle Roy during the trip.
여행 동안 댄과 로이 삼촌 같은 동반자가 있어서 나에게는 행운이었다.
There were obstacles to overcome and challenges to meet, but what adventure doesn’t?
극복해야 할 장애물과 직면해야 할 난제가 있었지만, 그렇지 않은 모험이 있을까?
I took a deep breath, dove into a new world, and faced challenges.
나는 심호흡을 했고, 새로운 세상으로 뛰어들었고, 도전을 마주했다.
All I needed to take with me was courage.
내가 가지고 가야 할 것은 용기뿐이었다.
I am already looking forward to my next trip in the future.
나는 앞으로의 다음 여행을 벌써부터 기대하고 있다.

The festival features three sports competitions: wrestling, archery, and horse racing.

In the wrestling competition, hundreds of male players participate.

In the archery competition, each athlete is given four arrows to hit targets 65 to 75 meters away.
