A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
한 장의 그림은 천 마디의 말보다 가치가 있다
Paul is a comic writer.
Paul은 만화가이다.
He has been drawing many comics about overcoming challenges in communication, and it all began with his experience at the hospital with his mother, Anna.
그는 의사소통의 어려움을 극복하는 것에 관한 만화를 많이 그려왔고, 이는 모두 병원에서 그의 어머니 Anna와 함께 겪은 그의 경험에서 시작되었다.
A few years ago, doctors told Anna that she had Parkinson’s disease.

It is a progressive disease which affects the nervous system.

It makes muscles shake and gradually become stiff.

Over the years, Anna’s health got worse and worse.
몇 년 동안 Anna의 건강은 점점 더 나빠졌다.
She could not move her body and she was hospitalized many times.
그녀는 몸을 움직일 수 없었고 여러 번 입원했다.
Most of all, communication with other people got harder as she lost control of the muscles of her mouth.
무엇보다도 입 근육을 조절하지 못하게 되면서 다른 사람들과의 소통이 어려워졌다.
It took a long time to understand what she was trying to say.
그녀가 말하고자 하는 바를 이해하는 데 많은 시간이 걸렸다.
In addition, her body was off balance, making her head and back lean to the side.
게다가 그녀의 몸은 균형이 맞지 않아 그녀의 머리와 등을 옆으로 기울게 만들었다.
This meant that she couldn’t sleep well due to pain, and that she sometimes fell out of her bed.
이것은 그녀가 통증 때문에 잘 잘 수 없었고 때때로 침대에서 떨어졌다는 것을 의미했다.
Paul was there to help his mother.
Paul은 어머니를 돕기 위해 그곳에 있었다.
However, every time he had to leave the hospital, he was worried about her falling off the bed and hurting herself.
그러나 그가 병원을 떠나야 할 때마다 그는 어머니가 침대에서 떨어져 다칠 것을 걱정했다.
Whenever he left the hospital, Paul wanted to ask for extra care for the discomfort and danger this symptom might bring.

However, every time Anna was newly hospitalized, different staff members took care of her, and they did not know about her unusual posture and its problems.

Paul was tired of having to explain the situation to each staff member every time.

Instead, he posted a note explaining that Anna’s bent posture can be potentially dangerous.

It also explained how to set up pillows to prevent her from falling off the bed.

But people did not seem to notice it.

Frustrated, he went to get some fresh air.

As he walked towards the elevator, he noticed a sign that said “DANGER” with an image of a person slipping on water.
엘리베이터를 향해 걸어가면서 그는 물을 밟고 미끄러지는 사람의 이미지와 함께 ‘위험’이라고 적힌 표지판을 발견했다.
The sign warned people of the slippery floor with both a word and an image.
그 표지판은 글과 이미지 모두로 사람들에게 미끄러운 바닥에 대해 경고했다.
All of a sudden, it occurred to Paul that comics could help.
갑자기, 만화가 도움이 될 수 있다는 생각이 Paul에게 떠올랐다.
He was a comic writer after all!
어쨌든 그는 만화가였으니까!
Using both words and pictures would surely help explain Anna’s unusual posture and how to help her.
글과 그림 모두를 사용하는 것은 분명히 Anna의 특이한 자세와 그녀를 어떻게 도울지 설명하는 데 도움을 줄 것이었다.
Right away, he drew a comic consisting of a picture and a message on a piece of paper.
곧바로 그는 종이에 그림과 메시지로 구성된 만화를 그렸다.
He posted the note up on the wall above Anna’s bed and then went home to get some sleep.
그는 Anna의 침대 위 벽에 메모를 붙여 두고 잠을 좀 자기 위해 집에 갔다.
The next morning when he got back to the hospital, he noticed that Anna’s head had been supported with pillows just like the picture in the note.
다음 날 아침에 병원으로 돌아갔을 때, 그는 Anna의 머리가 메모에 있는 그림과 똑같이 베개로 받쳐져 있는 것을 발견했다.
It seemed that the nurse had seen the picture and helped Anna.
간호사가 그 그림을 보고 Anna를 도운 것으로 보였다.
Anna slept comfortably and she was, most importantly of all, safe.
Anna는 편안하게 잠을 잤고, 무엇보다도, 안전했다.
This was the first comic Paul drew at the hospital, and he was surprised to see how well it worked.
이것이 Paul이 병원에서 그린 첫 번째 만화였고, 그는 그것이 얼마나 효과적이었는지를 보고 놀랐다.
Realizing the potential of comics, Paul decided to ask Anna if there was anything she wanted to say to people.

He sat down with her and asked her what comics he should draw.

Finally, she asked Paul to draw a comic titled “Anna’s Goal.”

In the comic, she wanted to look healthy, walking with her walker.

She did not want herself to be seen as just another sick old lady in a hospital bed.

Looking at this picture, the people around her began to think of her not just as a patient but as an individual who tries hard to achieve her goal.
이 그림을 보며 주변 사람들은 그녀를 그저 환자가 아닌 자신의 목표를 이루기 위해 노력하는 사람으로 생각하기 시작했다.
It led people around her, including hospital staff members, other patients, and visitors to give words of encouragement and support whenever they saw her.
이는 병원의 직원들과 다른 환자들, 그리고 방문자들을 포함한 주위 사람들이 그녀를 볼 때마다 격려와 지지의 말을 건네게 했다.
Paul and Anna still face challenges.
Paul과 Anna는 여전히 어려움에 맞닥뜨린다.
However, comics have been a great help in overcoming them.
하지만, 만화는 이를 극복하는 데 큰 도움이 되어 왔다.
Comics can be powerful communication tools that take complex ideas and communicate them in a simple and efficient way.
만화는 복잡한 생각을 전달하고, 간단하고 효율적인 방법으로 소통할 수 있는 강력한 의사소통 수단이 될 수 있다.
There is an old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”
옛말에 ‘백문이 불여일견’이라는 말이 있다.
Paul’s story shows that words and pictures work well together to tell stories, to communicate with others, to bring out kindness, and to create personal connections.
Paul의 이야기는 말과 그림이 이야기를 전달하고, 다른 사람들과 소통하고, 친절을 베풀고, 개인적인 유대감을 만드는 데 함께 잘 작용한다는 것을 보여 준다.
